Garden District Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, August 18 at  6:30
Martha Cooper Library  1377 N. Catalina Ave.

1.  Community improvement projects:  Lori Aldecoa from Pima County Neighborhood Reinvestment and Andrea Altamirano from Chairman Richard Elias' office gave an update on the delay on the sidewalks on the east side of Columbus from Pima to Speedway.  An error in surveying years ago resulted in a shortage of 3 feet by 1000 linear feet of land available for public projects (our sidewalk) along the east side of Columbus betweeen Grant and Pima.  Fortunately the original grant budgeted sufficient funds for this land to be purchased from the owners. Lori and Andrea explained that our neighborhood association has to approve using those funds that way.  Pat Rigg so moved; Meg Johnson seconded; and the motion passed.

An update from Meg on Aug. 22:  The Neighborhood Reinvestment Oversight Committee met yesterday and approved purchasing the Right of Ways needed to finish the sidewalk on the east side of Columbus.  The City and the County Board of supervisors still need to vote on this, but they rarely override the decisions of the Neighborhood Reinvestment Oversight Committee.  Then there is a lot of paperwork that has to be navigated before the construction crew returns, but, hopefully, the sidewalks will be finished within the next few months.  Completion is expected by Feb. 2010.

2. Officer Denise Zeis was scheduled to give an update on "No left turn" out of Fry's and Walmart, but was unable to attend.  All of us are urged to turn right only onto Alvernon and Grant.

3. Mike Grassinger from The Planning Center presented drawings and descriptions of the development being constructed on the northeast corner of Alvernon and Lee. It includes Crizmac, and adds five new 1-story buildings, each proposed to be sold separately.  Bldg. #1, which is near completion,  will be a pediatric office; the other buildings are currently planned, but await purchasers before actual building can begin.  Those purchasers are expected to form a business association, which would be responsible for upkeep of the driveways and parking areas, and for the landscaping.
There is no provision for any environmentally sustainable aspects:  no solar panels on the roof, no gutters and cisterns for water harvesting, etc.

4. Reports and Updates:
Library-- Mary Givins reported on Martha Cooper Library’s continuing full-house service to the neighborhood.  The Library is now open several hours seven days a week, and always has many patrons every hour, from pre-schoolers with parents or baby-sitters through teens up to elders escaping the heat by sitting in one of those comfy chairs to read a novel.
To celebrate Tucson’s 234th birthday, on Thurs, Aug. 20th, MCL will cut a big birthday cake at 3:30pm, sharing with all who are there.
Sat, 8-22, Marge Pellegrino will offer a writing workshop from 2:00-3:00pm; sign up by email.  Those who have been fortunate enough to attend a workshop led by Marge praise her loudly.

Tucson Botanical Gardens--Next month the volunteer coordinator will report.

Wright School --Again no representative from the school was present.  Pat Rigg reported that the Pima County Democratic Party, LD28, is adopting the school, raising money for school supplies.
